Vein disease manifests itself in many forms including varicose, spider veins, leg swelling, stasis dermatitis, phlebitis, thrombophlebitis, pelvic congestion, deep vein thrombus, superficial vein thrombosis, chronic venous insufficiency, phlebitis, venous stasis among others. Each of these signs or symptoms of vein disease can be hard to diagnose to the untrained physician or practitioner. At Truffles Vein Specialists we teach national courses on the diagnosis and management of chronic vein disease. We have lectured at UCLA, Mass General, University of Indiana hospital systems, University of Cincinatti as well as other large institutions, 

For the great majority of patients, a simple visual examination by an experienced provider can determine if the patient clinically has venous insufficiency. An ultrasound that is performed by a Registered Vascular Sonographer is needed to determine if the disease is strictly superficial, if the deep system is involved and which veins are working, and which are not working. 

All of our sonographers have experience and expertise in the diagnoses of pelvic vein disease, including pelvic congestion, iliac vein compression syndrome, May Thurner, Nutcracker syndrome, SMAS, and other complicated compression syndromes. 

Varicose veins are simply veins that have lost their anatomical structure. This is due to the failure of one-way valves to stop venous flow from the forces of gravity. Varicose veins are evidence of increased venous pressure, it is this venous pressure that is not normal and unhealthy. Normal venous system is a low-pressure low energy system, chronic valve failure causes an unnatural imbalance and can cause a myriad of symptoms and problems including bulging veins, darkened skin, swelling, nerve pain and heaviness. In short varicose veins are a way of your body telling you something is wrong. 

Spider veins or reticular veins are small blue or red veins that are less than 2 millimeters in length.  At Truffles Vein Specialists we view spider veins as an indication of an underlying problem.  Spider veins are due to pressure in the venous system. Spider veins at an early age is indication of a much more significant problem and should not be taken lightly.
